Sinlo and Tigerlily Banks are headed to Buckland via the Stock Road, but when Tig's pony, Spot, is spooked and throws them from her back, they get lost trying to find her. When finally it seems they are about to find their way, just as the sun starts to set, they are met by both a strange Big Folk and a wolf. Poor Tig is attacked and Sin and the stranger, Kylin, must save her.

Travelling with his riders across the Gap on patrol, Theodred Prince comes upon a stranger leading a horse alone near the Gap of Rohan. Upon further questioning, both reveal surprising and wonderous things. Theodred shows his royal bearing by judging the stranger's words and granting her passage through his lands - when he would have at first taken her back to his city Edoras for further questioning. In the midst of this meeting, a Rider of the Mark comes to witness.
